Seems as though I just finished worrying about how I would fit into last year’s swimsuit and now here comes autumn (it officially begins Monday).
Even though summer disappeared so rapidly, I must admit that fall is my favorite time of year. I am very ready to put away the pastel summer cottons, the shorts and the flip-flops and bring forth clothes with jackets, snuggly sweater sets, scarves and real shoes.
I like feeling a cool breeze on my pillow at night, and the knowledge that it is from the open window, not our central air-conditioning system.
New York City museums are bursting with new exhibits, and Broadway comes to life once again, putting the lie to those who yearly predict its demise.
I particularly love to watch the start, and then the progression of, the spectacular color show unique to our New England area.
The morning paper bringing news of other places that suffer from unpredictable weather patterns, which create devastating chaos, is a grim reminder of just how fortunate we are.
Fall also seems to suit me temperamentally, since I am geared to always being busy and to setting new goals for myself. Summer appeals to my lazier, let-it-go-till-tomorrow side, but fall energizes and is full of bright promise.
There is a new session of water aerobics at the Madison Aqua Dome, and the renewed hope of losing a few pounds. Clubs and committees that disbanded for the summer are meeting again; there are a variety of adult education classes to join, which add to our knowledge and our friendships.
Fall is also the time we catch up with those friends who were away for the summer months. These golden months are when I try to spend a contemplative hour at Branford Point or Hammonasset Beach. What a delight to feel the still-warm sun on your skin and drink in the beauty of the area, minus the noise and distraction of summer crowds.
Fashion week has come and gone and my mail is full of circulars featuring clothes meant for some woman from Mars, certainly not for me or anyone I know. I scan the glossy pages and shake my head no to the thigh-high boots, no to the body stockings and no to the see-through blouses. My five-year-old pantsuit will do just fine. Well, maybe I’ll treat myself to a great cashmere sweater.
There’s definitely something about a crispness in the air that invigorates and makes me want to rid closets of their clutter, spruce up the basement and neaten up my desk. Perhaps it is the silent message Mother Nature is sending, to prepare and make snug and tidy our living spaces in preparation for the winter to come.
"Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all."
