Valentine’s
Day is the one day a year when we can seize the opportunity
to do some of the thoughtful, romantic things we mean to
do the rest of the year. But in making plans for next Saturday,
perhaps you are tired of the same old cards and candy routine.
In that case, there are a lot of new options available.
- The New Haven Chorale performs at Woosley Hall at 7:30
on Saturday and would be a lovely way to spend an evening.
- Also on Feb 14, you and your special partner could enjoy
the Pulitzer Prize-nominated play by A.R. Gurney, "Love
Letters," which will have two performances at the First
Church of Christ, Scientist on Park Street in Guilford.
Tickets for the 4 p.m. or 8 p.m. performances are $25-$20
and may be purchased in advance at the Guilford Youth and
Family Services office at 36 Graves Ave., Guilford, (203)
453-3890.
- For something even more upbeat, the Ivoryton Theatre
is presenting "Long Live the Beatles" Feb. 13-15.
And don’t forget the Madison Art Society Exhibition
and Sale at the Scranton Library now through Feb. 28.
- If you don’t find the perfect painting at that
venue to celebrate your love, you might also visit the Stony
Creek Gallery, which is hosting a Celebration of Love today
in support of the Children’s Cancer Fund. The gallery
at 152 Thimble Islands Road in Branford will have area artists
showcasing chocolates, hand-designed ties and scarves, gift
cards and art. Foe, an American bistro, and Forte’s
market will offer samples of their cuisine and Skinsations
will have chair massages.
- If you can’t find any suitable art work at the
above events, you might wish to consider having one of your
favorite photos (of you, your loved one or a pet) reproduced
on textured canvas or in the style of a traditional oil
painting. www. canvasondemand.com claims it can be accomplished
in three or four days for a cost of from $59 to several
hundred dollars, depending on size and choice of frame.
- Many of our area restaurants will be featuring special
Valentine’s Day dinners or if you are especially adventuresome,
you could go to SideBar in New York City, where you could
hear a special lecture on the history of Valentine’s
Day while tasting delicious and decadent desserts paired
with chocolate cocktails. There is even a chocolate and
dessert-tasting walking tour.
- And for the more traditional ways to show your love,
serving breakfast in bed to your partner, leaving a loving
note or poem or their pillow, doing something that especially
suits their interests, or watching an old romantic movie
together ... these are also ways to say, "You are special"
or "I care about you."
Which reminds me to send to all of you, dear readers, my
love, and thanks to all who faithfully follow this column
every week.
