| Shoreline Eldercare
Alliance is throwing a party, A Celebration of Healthy Aging,
and all readers of this column, their families and friends
are invited.
SEA is a nonprofit educational clearinghouse and can be
a one-stop resource for all those navigating the sometimes
stormy waters of aging. We are all going to be one day older
tomorrow so it makes sense to learn how to age better, healthier,
smarter and have fun while doing it.
This free event runs from 4-7:30 p.m. April 29 at The Village
at Mariner’s Point, 111 South Shore Drive, overlooking
Long Island Sound in East Haven. The keynote speaker is
Dr. Gerard Kerins, well-known geriatrician at the Hospital
of St. Raphael, who will speak about “Improved Awareness
For a Healthy Lifestyle.”
Professionals will talk about ways of preserving your memories
and exercising your brain. In addition, there will be an
art exhibit led by Dorothy Powers and her Tower One art
class, water therapy by the new Shoreline YMCA, relaxation
technique demonstrations, chair massage, and bone density
and blood pressure screenings.
Sample delicious food offerings from local vendors and
the chefs at The Village at Mariner’s Point and taste
delights from a chocolate fondue fountain while enjoying
a variety of musical entertainment, including the fabulous
Blossom Tappers, The Survivors Band and the Tower One Choir.
In addition to the good doctor’s talk, a panel of
remarkable seniors will share their secrets to happy longevity.
I am pleased to serve as the moderator for the panel, which
will include Lucille Clark, Helene Rosenberg, Irene Potocki,
John Nolan and Rosemary Riccio.
Another panel presentation will feature financial professionals:
Marcia Turner, a daily money manager; Mark Connell, an eldercare
attorney; and Sylvia Patterson from Guilford Savings Bank.
They will discuss planning strategies for your tomorrow.
Major sponsors for the event are Hospital of Saint Raphael,
Yale-New Haven Hospital, The Village at Mariner’s
Point, Omnicare of Connecticut, VITAS-Innovative Hospice
Care and Guilford Savings Bank. Call The Village at 203-467-0067
if you plan to attend. See you there.
The Shoreline Eldercare Alliance came into being approximately
two years ago when a few professionals involved in elder
care were discussing their concerns about their clients
and their families who were confused and lost in the maze
of elder care; not knowing what was available, they often
made poor decisions.
Professionals know the difference timely choices can make:
Choices made in a crisis often turn out to be unwise. Bernadette
DiGiulian, a geriatric care manager, was one of SEA’s
founders and there are now 22 members (including your columnist)
representing various professions related to elder care.
SEA’s mission is to educate and raise public awareness
about issues and services important to seniors, families,
professionals and the wider community and to help people
make healthy choices throughout their lives.
A group of SEA members is available to give free presentations
to service groups, agencies, churches and other community
organizations. Call 1-800-426-5086.
